Why Pre & Post-Operative Rehab Matters
Surgery is a significant event for your body. Research consistently shows that patients who prepare their tissues before surgery and begin rehabilitation promptly afterward experience faster recovery times, less post-operative pain, and better long-term outcomes.
Prehabilitation (before surgery) focuses on strengthening the tissues around the surgical site, reducing inflammation, improving circulation, and optimizing your nervous system so your body is in the best possible condition going into the procedure.
Post-operative rehabilitation (after surgery) focuses on managing pain and swelling without relying solely on medication, breaking down scar tissue before it restricts movement, restoring range of motion, and rebuilding strength in the affected area. Dr. Andres uses acupuncture, dry needling, myofascial release, and bodywork to support each phase of your recovery.

Pre & Post-Operative Rehab FAQs
How soon before surgery should I start prehab?
Ideally, 2 to 6 weeks before your scheduled surgery. This gives Dr. Andres enough time to optimize the tissues around the surgical site and address any existing pain or dysfunction. Even a few sessions before surgery can make a meaningful difference in your recovery.
When can I start treatment after surgery?
This depends on your procedure and your surgeon's guidelines. For many surgeries, gentle acupuncture and light bodywork can begin within 1 to 2 weeks post-op, targeting areas away from the surgical site to manage pain and support healing. Direct treatment of the surgical area typically begins once your surgeon clears you, often around 4 to 6 weeks.
Will you coordinate with my surgeon or physical therapist?
Absolutely. Dr. Andres regularly works alongside orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and other healthcare providers. He can communicate directly with your surgical team to ensure his treatments align with your post-operative protocols and PT program.
Can acupuncture help with post-surgical pain?
Yes. Acupuncture has strong evidence for reducing post-operative pain and inflammation. It can also help manage nausea, improve sleep quality, and reduce the need for pain medication during recovery. Many patients find that acupuncture provides relief that complements their prescribed post-surgical care.
