What Is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion is one of the oldest healing practices in East Asian medicine, with a history spanning thousands of years. It involves the burning of dried mugwort (a medicinal herb also known as Artemisia argyi) near specific acupuncture points on the body. The gentle, penetrating warmth stimulates circulation, activates the body's immune response, and promotes the flow of energy and blood through areas of stagnation or deficiency.
Moxibustion can be applied directly or indirectly. In indirect moxibustion, the most common method, a moxa stick is held close to the skin or placed on top of an acupuncture needle, allowing the warmth to radiate into the tissue without touching the skin directly. This makes the treatment comfortable and deeply relaxing for most patients.
Dr. Tyler Andres uses moxibustion as a complement to acupuncture, particularly for conditions that benefit from warmth: cold or stiff joints, chronic pain that worsens in cold weather, digestive weakness, and conditions rooted in deficiency or poor circulation. Living at elevation in Salida, many patients find that cold and dry conditions aggravate their symptoms, making moxibustion an especially relevant therapy for this region.

Moxibustion FAQs
Does moxibustion burn the skin?
No, even using a direct moxa appro that Dr. Andres primarily uses, the moxa does not burn all the way to the skin. The moxa cone is extinguished at a comfortable distance, and the warmth is carefully monitored throughout the session. Often there is a 'ping' like sensation of activation through the process.
What does moxibustion smell like?
Burning mugwort has a distinctive herbal, slightly smoky aroma. Many patients find the scent grounding and relaxing. The treatment room is well-ventilated, and the smell typically does not linger on clothing for long after the session.
What is the difference between moxibustion and acupuncture?
Acupuncture uses needles inserted into the skin to stimulate specific points. Moxibustion uses heat from burning mugwort applied near those same points. The two therapies are often used together: acupuncture regulates the nervous system and releases tension, while moxibustion adds warming and circulatory benefits. Dr. Andres frequently combines them in a single session.
Who benefits most from moxibustion?
Moxibustion is particularly helpful for patients with conditions that worsen in cold or damp weather, chronic pain with stiffness, digestive weakness, fatigue, and conditions rooted in deficiency. It is also commonly used for immune support and general wellness maintenance.
How often should I receive moxibustion?
Frequency depends on your condition. For acute issues or seasonal support, weekly sessions may be recommended. For general wellness and maintenance, moxibustion every 2 to 4 weeks can help keep the body warm, circulated, and balanced. Dr. Andres will recommend a schedule based on your treatment plan.
